After SC censure, Siddaramaiah calls all-party meet on Cauvery water

After the Supreme Court reprimanded Karnataka for ignoring its order to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday will chair an all-party meeting in Bengaluru to decide the future course of action on the matter.

The top court has ordered Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water per day for the next six days.

According to media reports, leaders of both Houses, lawmakers, including central ministers representing the state, ministers concerned of Cauvery basin and district in-charge ministers had been asked to attend the meeting.

The apex court had said that Karnataka will not show any defiance and warned saying “no one would know when the wrath of the law” would fall on it.

Moreover, a bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice U.U. Lalit  directed the Centre to constitute the Cauvery Water Management Board by October 4.

Reacting to the order, protests in many parts of the state were reported. After protests broke out in Mandya and Mysuru districts, the police made elaborate security arrangements.

Karnataka Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil said the government would decide further course of action after going through the judgment and discussing with the legal team headed by advocate Fali Nariman.

Advocate Nariman told the bench he has unequivocally said he would not argue for Karnataka till the orders of Supreme Court are complied with.

Citing low storage in its reservoirs, Karnataka has maintained its inability to release water to Tamil Nadu. The state also cited drinking water needs in Bengaluru and neighbouring districts.

On September 23, the state assembly had also adopted a resolution saying that it will not provide water for any other purpose except to meet drinking needs, citing “acute distress” and “alarmingly low levels” in dams.
