Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, the Congress might face a heavy blow with reports of its former UP unit president Rita Bhauguna Joshi readying to join the BJP.
However, neither the saffron party nor her family have confirmed the report, India Today said. Her brother Vijay Bahuguna outrightly dismissed the reports, saying these were “just rumours with no truth in them”.
Rita Bahuguna Joshi, 67, had led the Congress in the previous UP Assembly polls in 2012, in which the party performed poorly. This time, the Congress projected Sheila Dikshit as its CM candidate for the upcoming polls. This apparently has disturbed Rita Bahuguna Joshi, according to reports.
Rita Bahuguna Joshi is an MLA from the Lucknow Cantonment constituency and was the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 2007 to 2012.
Apart from being a senior Congress leader in Uttar Pradesh, Rita Bahuguna Joshi has also been a spokesperson of the party and was often seen taking on BJP and RSS representatives in TV debates.
Rita is the daughter of former Congress leader and UP CM Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna. She joined politics when she was nominated by SP as its mayor candidate from Allahabad. It was after she won that election that she quit the SP and joined the Congress.
