Nabha Jailbreak: Govt suspends DG Jails, dismisses SP, DSP
Breaking into the Nabha jail in Punjab, ten armed men on Sunday morning freed Khalistan Liberation Force chief Harminder Singh Mintoo and five other gangsters from the prison. In the wake of the jailbreak, Punjab government suspended and dismisses officials.
Reportedly, Punjab Government suspended DG (Jails) and dismissed two other senior prison officials even as the opposition Congress said the incident exposed the “complete breakdown of law and order” in the state and triggered fears of revival of terrorism ahead of assembly elections.
It has been reported that the armed men were wearing police uniform and fired over over 100 rounds of ammunition at police personnel.
Media agency reported that the police are now at the spot and a probe has been initiated. The five other gangsters who have been freed are Kashmir Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Vicky Gondra, Neeta Deol and Vikramjeet Singh Vicky.
According to police, six to eight persons in police uniforms came on four vehicles Toyota Fortuner (white color) Hyundai Verna (white), Honda City (white) and Hyundai i20 (beige color) and fired several shots before escaping with the six inmates.
Reports have said that following the daring prison break, high alert has been sounded in Punjab. Neighbouring Haryana, Himachal Pradesh have also been alerted.
Police believed they fled towards Haryana. An alert was sounded in the adjoining states of Haryana, Rajasthan and and special check posts were set up to nab the accused.
Patiala Range Deputy Inspector General, A S Chahal said the armed men broke into the jail between 8:30 am to 9:00 on the pretext that they had come to take some inmate for a court hearing.
Chahal said 25 to 30 empty shells had been recovered from the site. DIG said the men were attired in police uniforms with one of the men wearing the uniform of a Sub Inspector and remaining wearing uniforms of constable ranks.
Special Investigation Team has been set up by the government to look into the lapses as well as any conspiracy theories surrounding the jail break incident.
Punjab government has also announced Rs 25 lakh reward for anyone with information about the escaped prisioners.
Several check posts have been set up across Punjab, reported CNN-News18.
It is to be noted that Mintoo is an accused in 10 terror cases. He was arrested in 2014. The news channel also reported that Mintoo was a high-profile criminal who had links with the Inter-Serivces Intelligence (ISI) in Pakistan.
