Assam: Three army jawans killed in encounter with suspected ULFA terrorists
The blast hit the army convoy as the encounter is underway between the security forces and suspected militants in Tinsukia district.
Three army jawans were killed after a powerful blast hit an army vehicle in Digboi in Tinsukia district of Assam, media reports said.
Police official suspected that the attack was carried out by militants of of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) in upper Assam.
The incident took place at around 5.30 am, in the Pengeri area, Defence public relations officer Lt. Col. Suneet Newton said, according to IANS.
Newton said: "The militants had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road. When the IED exploded, the convoy stopped. Then the militants fired indiscriminately," Newton said.
The injured soldiers were taken to a hospital where one of them died. The report said after the blast, the suspected militants starts firing at the army convoy and the encounter is underway. On Wednesday, militants attacked a van of the Pengeri tea estate killing one person and injuring two others.
