Mohiniyattam enthusiasts in UAE witnessed yet another exuberant, colourful and elegant Mohiniyattam performance by noted dancer Aswathy Srikanth on Friday evening at Abu Dhabi Kerala Social Centre. Aswathy is the daughter of well known Malayalam writer and filmmaker MT Vasudevan Nair.
Aswathy's performance marked the inaugural edition of “Arangu” by Lasyatarangini UAE Chapter, an online collective of Mohiniyattam exponents and enthusiasts.
Aswathy began her performance with a traditional ‘cholkettu’ followed by a Swathi Thirunal Keerthanam. The second half of her performance included her recent production – Amba to Shikhandi which was a woman-centric performance narrating the transformation Amba underwent to become Shikhandi to avenge her rival Bhishma.
The event marked Aswathy’s first Mohiniyattam performance in the UAE. Lasyatarangini is the first ever platform in UAE that is completely devoted to promote Mohiniyattam. Further editions are intended to showcase popular Mohiniyattam artists from India and elsewhere and to reach out to a wider cultural audience in UAE. In addition to the performance series, Lasyatarangini will conduct seminars, workshops and live demos on Mohiniyattam through non performance series titled “Samavesh” to generate academic interest in the art form.
A documentary titled “Spatial Rhythms” on the late Kavalam Narayana Panicker, the inimitable dramatist, poet and director, was screened at the event but had to be discontinued due to technical issues. Organisers announced that there will be a re-screening in the near future.
“Lasyatarangini aims to popularise Mohiniyattam in UAE and showcase artists who can present the dance form in its most pure and authentic form”, said Priya M. Nair, curator of Lasyatarangini UAE Chapter.
