Aswathy’s Mohiniyattam performance to kickstart Lasyatarangini’s festivities today 7 pm, at Abu Dhabi
Eminent Mohiniyattam dancer Ms Aswathy will perform today 7 pm at Kerala Social Centre (KSC), Abu Dhabi to mark the Mohiniyattam Arangu organised by Lasyatarangini.
Ms Aswathy is the daughter of eminent Malayalam writer, Jnanpith awardee and legendary filmmaker MT Vasudevan Nair (affectionaltely called MT) and Mohiniyattam exponent Kalamandalam Saraswathi.
The event marks her first Mohiniyattam performance in UAE. Aswathy is married to N Srikanth, who is himself a great Bharatnatyam exponent and teacher.
Hailing from a renowned family of artists, she was introduced to Mohiniyattam in her teens and her first Guru was her mother herself. She also learnt Kuchipudi from Dr Venpati Chinna Satyam and Bharatnatyam from her husband and from her mother.
“The first half of my performance is based on traditional forms of ‘cholkettu’ and ‘keerthanam’, and second half focuses on my recent production–Amba to Shikandi–” Aswathy told Naradanews ahead of her performance today at KSC.
“It will be woman-centric performance, that narrates the transformation Amba, a character from Mahabharatha underwent to become Shikandi,” she added.
She had earlier performed in USA, Canada, France, Belgium, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bahrain,Kuwait and Srilanka.
The gala event has been organised for the first time in UAE in memory of Kavalam Narayana Panicker, poet and the doyen of traditional and experimental theater art forms in Kerala. A documentary titled “Spatial Rhythms” also will be screened on the occasion to pay rich tributes to Kavalam.
Aswathy added, it is indeed an honour to be part such an online initiative to promote Mohiniyaattam in UAE.
The event kickstarts the inaugural edition of Lasyatarangi’s Mohiniyattam Arangu in UAE. Lasyatarangini is online art collective of Mohiniyattam exponents from around the globe to promote and conserve Kerala’s rich art and dance forms.
Eminent gurus Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, Bharati Shivaji, Neena Prasad, Gopika Varma and Smitha Rajan among others are the patrons of group. Lasyatarangini has been conducting Samavesh (non-performance series and seminars) and Mohiniyattam festivals in all over India.
