BJP wins Gujarat local body polls, gains 40 seats from Congress

BJP gained 40 seats from the Congress, who has managed to win only 17 seats

Offering a big boost for the BJP amid the demonetisation crisis, the ruling party in Gujarat has won 109 of 126 municipal and district panchayat seats in 16 districts in the state.

Announced on Tuesday, the result revealed that BJP gained 40 seats from the Congress, who has managed to win only 17 seats.

The latest result is expected to boost the party part in the state, where  the party was seen to be struggling in the face of massive protests by Patels and Dalits , in the name of reservation and cow respectively.

Expressing his happiness over the result, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked people of Gujarat for continued trust in BJP.

Noting different election results across the country, Modi said it shows illustrate that people want all-round progress of the nation & will not tolerate corruption & misgovernance.

Meanwhile, the BJP has made big gains in Maharashtra election after winning most number of seats in the civic polls that were held for 147 municipal councils governing small cities.

The Maharashtra election swathe BJP  winning 851 of 3,705 seats across 147 municipal councils and 17 panchayats, while the party secured in 52 councils where council chiefs were elected directly.

Meanwhile, in an election held immediately after the demonetization announcement, the BJP had lost all 17 seats in the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) of Panvel, Maharashtra.

The BJP lost all 17 seats to members of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), Shiv Sena, Congress and the NCP alliance. The PWP won 15 seats while its allies, Sena and Congress, won one seat each.
