Celebratory firing death: Sadhvi Deva Thakur surrenders before Karnal dist court
Police said they were yet to recover weapons and vehicles used in the crime and know the whereabouts of the other accused.
All India Hindu Mahasabha vice-president Sadhvi Deva Thakur surrendered herself to the police in Haryana on Friday after a case was registered against her for killing a woman and injuring four others during a wedding celebration in Karnal.
Sadhvi Deva Thakur, a self-proclaimed godwoman who was a guest at a ring ceremony in Karnal district had allegedly killed one woman and injured four others in celebratory firing. Sadhvi and her associated were accused of carrying 12 bore guns.
The police said they were yet to recover weapons and vehicles used in the crime and know the whereabouts of the other accused.
Sadhvi has claimed innocence and said the case is a conspiracy against her. “I am innocent, I need urgent medical attention, it's a conspiracy against me, there were other people who were firing,” she said.
Karnal city police have said that they will take her to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh to recover the weapons used in the crime and go to Varanasi for her vehicle. Besides conducting raids at various places, the Karnal police had issued a look-out circular at the airport against her and the private bodyguards.
It is said that Sadhvi and her associates started firing indiscriminately during the function. As soon as the firing started, the venue manager called the police and informed about it. In the meantime, the pistol of one of them got stuck. While rectifying it, a shot was fired causing injuries to those present.
The kin of the victim had reportedly said that Sadhvi’s guards were firing at will and didn’t care who was in front of them.
It is said that Sadhvi, who wears a saffron outfit and a turban complete with gold jewellery, is known to fancy firearms and has a flashy lifestyle. She likes to pose with guns and has strong views against a particular community.
