As the government directed people to deposit or exchange old notes in banks across the country by December 30, 2016, the leaves of bank employees have been reportedly cancelled till December 30, Tamil News Channel Polimer news reported.

However, no official confirmation has arrived yet. Banks across the country are open on Saturday and Sunday to help customers queuing up to deposit their 500 and 1000 rupee notes.

Huge rush and long queues were witnessed today at banks and ATMs as people gathered to get lower denomination currency and new banknotes in lieu of the now-defunct currency.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the government expected some rush during the initial days and it will come down in few days.

Arguing people to cooperate, Finance Minister said this is massive operation to replace 86 pc of currency under circulationand we are monitoring the situation as banks working overtime to help people exchange the old notes.
