Former MoS, BJP leader Jayawantiben Mehta passes away
BJP leader and former Union Minister of State Jayawantiben Mehta passed away in the early hours of Monday after a brief illness.
Mehta, 78, was a former minister of state for power. According to PTI, she breathed her last at 1.25 am.
Maharashtra BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said the last rites would take place at 5.30 pm at Shivaji Park crematorium.
Born in Aurangabad in Maharashtra, she served 19 months in jail during 1975 Emergency. Mehta was made the member of national executive of the BJP in 1980 and made All-India general secretary in 1988.
Mehta was a member of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. She was made the minister of state in 1999.
She rose through the ranks of BJP from a corporator, an MLA and later a Lok Sabha member, succeeding the late Murli Deora from the South Mumbai constituency.
