General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday took charge as Pakistan’s new army chief, following the resignation of Gen.Raheel Sharif at Rawalpindi in an official ceremony.

In the ceremony held at the Army Hockey Stadium, close to the General Headquarters (GHQ),  Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Bajwa was bestowed with the command of the army by Gen.Raheel.

Bajwa was made the army chief on Saturday by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by elevating him to the rank of four-star general. Raheel had declared in January that he would not seek an extension as chief.

“I will retire on the due date,” outgoing General had said.

Rumours were doing the rounds that Sharif-led government would give Raheel extension at the eleventh hour pointing out that that country needed him to lead a war on terror.

The Army chief post in Pakistan is considered as a powerful and influential post.
