Happy Birthday Aishwarya Rai - The beauty who is traditional at home but a hot diva abroad
The ageless ARB has proved with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that she is clearly not finished yet and can scorch the screen with her enduring charm
The year 1994 was a turning point for India so far as beauty pageants are concerned. It was the year when two Indian beauties were crowned as the most beautiful women in the world. One was the leggy Bengali Sushmita Sen, who bagged the Miss Universe crown. And other was the doe-eyed beauty from Mangalore Aishwarya Rai. Overnight with the twin successes and the inspiration from Sushmita and Aishwarya, India became a country of beauty queens with the likes of Lara Dutta, Yukta Mookhey, Diana Hayden and Priyanka Chopra bagging the beauty crowns in the latter years.
And being a beauty queen, it was natural that tryst with Bollywood was bound to happen sooner or later. And for Aishwarya Rai, it was no different. Her stunning gorgeous looks and winsome persona made Bollywood directors make a beeline to her door and numerous advertisers pleaded her to endorse their products. Aishwarya has this mesmeric appeal. And the first sight of this attribute was when one saw the Pepsi commercial she featured in with Aamir Khan. 'Hi! I am Sanjana' was her words gave her instant stardom. And the rest as they say is history.
As far as her Bollywood career is concerned, it was not that successful that would make her the numero uno heroine. But nevertheless she had made her presence felt in some blockbuster movies and her performances in all of them earned her accolades and awards in heaps. Films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ( 1999 opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn), Devdas ( 2002 opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit), and Mohabbatein opposite Shah Rukh Khan ( 2002). Aishwarya had done three films with superstar Hrithik Roshan Dhoom 2 (2006), Jodha Akbar (2008) and Guzaarish (2010). And her pairing with Hrithik was widely appreciated as both are extremely good looking. In Dhoom 2, she had the nation swooning all over with her fast-paced racy number Crazy kiya re. It presented Aishwarya at her most stylish and sexy avatar.
Unfortunately the Hrithik–Ash pair did not sizzle again as she took a sabbatical and got married to Abhishek Bachchan (after dating Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi for a while) and became the daughter in- law of the iconic and one and only Amitabh Bachchan. After a break of five years, she last year staged a comeback in Sanjay Gupta’s Jazbaa (2015).
Amidst her Bollywood commitments, Aishwarya became a global star as she has now one of the regular stars to walk the red carpet at the renowned Cannes film festival for several years now. It is at Cannes one can see the transformation of Aishwarya Rai. The change is dramatic and seen to be believed. From a dutiful bahu at home donning the traditional Indian dresses, one is left wondering how Ash manages to switch with effortless ease to a superstar sexy diva when she steps abroad. Wearing those daring body revealing outfits with simply no inhibitions at all,all though some of her outfits have faced flak back home, the lady remains unfazed by the furore over her choices of dresses.
Despite high presence at Cannes and having big brands under her kitty, there was constant buzz about her film career. Her last two women-centric films Jazbaa (2015) and Sarabjit (2016) did not exactly set the box-office on fire so one wonders which film would be her comeback in the real sense. Now, Aishwarya pins her hopes on Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil . And reports suggested, Aishwarya herself wanted a bold role in the film.
The film did not have a smooth release as the MNS objected to the presence of Pakistan actor Fawad Khan(special appearance) as India-Pak ties took a beating post Uri attacks and India hitting back with surgical strikes. Finally, this Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma - starrer has hit the movie theatres. And the movie has been well received, going by early reports.
As the film got a positive response, Karan Johar’s presentation of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a never-seen-before sizzling avatar is winning accolades and is now all set be her comeback movie with a bang. Karan Johar's gamble of making a fresh pairing of Aishwarya (43) and Ranbir Kapoor (34) had paid off.
The pair even before the film’s release in the trailer’s created a buzz with their sizzling on- screen chemistry and even going on to shoot some intimate scenes. That set the tongues wagging. And the Bachchan’s see red. As both father in- law Amitabh Bachchan and husband Abhishek Bachchan who normally tweet everything under the sun were rather strangely silent on Aishwarya’s film and her smouldering chemistry with Ranbir Kapoor.
As Ash and Ranbir’s pairing became the talk of the town, the duo went ahead and flaunted their chemistry even off-screen too much to the agony of the Bachchans. They did a sexy hot photo-shoot for the Filmfare magazine. And the photographs of the pair in various sexy poses (one Ash lying in a sofa on Ranbir’s lap wearing a shirt and high boots, and the other sitting on Ranbir’s lap while he sits on a stool) prove why they are the hottest on-screen couple right now. No wonder their passionate photo-shoot had gone viral.
Moreover, the success of their pairing could not have come a right time for both of them. Karan Johar deserves credit for giving them a new lease of life. Ranbir was struggling with flops like Bombay Velvet and Besharam, and Ash wanted a comeback and she has got one.
As she turns 43, the ageless ARB has proved with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that she is clearly not finished yet and can scorch the screen with her enduring charm. And can give the younger heroines a run for their money in the box- office.
