How many times have you experienced a burning sensation while passing urine? A very common problem, the burning sensation is due to bacterial infection in the urinary tract, and it can be treated with simple home remedies. But you must go for these home remedies the moment you experience the burning, for, ignoring it even for some days would mean infection spreading to the kidney, in which case hospitalization and antibiotics is the solution.

A UTI can happen for a number of reasons, reasons which you probably won’t even think of like holding urine for long, using dirty public toilets or not peeing after intercourse. The chances of UTI are also high in patients with catheters.

Simple home remedies for UTI:

 Drink lots of water

Drinking water flushes out all the bacteria causing UTI. So drink at least eight glasses of cold water, and more till the burning sensation goes away.

Baking soda

Dissolve a pinch of baking soda in a glass of water, and drink it at one go. The alkaline nature of baking soda neutralises the acidity in your urine and thereby reduces the burning sensation. You can have this water at least four times a day for a week at stretch. But the good news is you won’t need to have it for more than two days as it is very effective remedy and does a quick job.

 Parsley

Boil a cup of fresh parsley in a pan of water and simmer for 10 minutes. Let it cool and drink. This drink acts as a diuretic that makes you flush out the harmful bacteria by peeing more often.

If you have dried parsley, add one table spoon to one glass of water.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are not only water-rich but delicious to eat. In fact, make cucumber a regular in your salad.

Celery

The seeds of celery are good diuretic agents. Just chewing a handful of celery seeds will help increase the production of urine and ease burning. You can even haven celery water. Make celery water by boiling a handful of celery seeds in a glass of water and drinking it after it has cooled down. You can have a glass of this daily.

 Use hot water bottle

When you have urinary tract infection, you may feel inflammation and irritation in the lower abdomen region. When this happens, placing a hot water bottle provides great relief. The gentle warmth relaxes the muscles and reduced the pain caused by inflammation.

 Ginger Tea

Ginger tea is very effective in reducing inflammation and pain caused during UTI. It is better to have it in plain water but if you don’t like the taste you can make normal tea with ginger.

 Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is good for treatment of UTI. The bacteria that cause UTI’s have small hair-like structures through which they stick to the lining of urethera. The combination of acidic substances in cranberry juice makes it harder for these ‘hairs’ to stick to the urethera lining. For good results, one must drink at least three glasses of this juice daily.

 Blueberries

You can either eat blue berries or have blueberry juice. Both are equally good.

 Horseradish

Grate the fresh Horseradish, take one teaspoon of it with a glass of water or milk, twice a day. Horseradish is both anti-microbial and bactericidal which means it inhibits the multiplication of infection-causing bacteria in the urinary tract as well as kills those already present.

 Cream of Tartar & Lemon

Mix one-and-a-half teaspoon of cream of tarter in a glass of fresh water and put a dash of fresh lime. Drink this mixture daily. Cream of tarter changes the acidic nature of urine making it difficult for the bacteria to survive.
