Ola to set up breath analyser kiosks outside pubs in Karnataka
To discourage people from drunk driving, Ola will facilitate cab bookings from the designated kiosks
Taxi aggregator Ola, in partnership with the government of Karnataka, will set up breath analyser kiosks at more than 1,000 pubs and rest-o-bars across the state.
The initiative was inaugurated on Thursday by Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs UT Khader at Social, a pub on Church Street.
To discourage people from drunk driving, Ola will facilitate cab bookings from the designated kiosks.
The campaign under the name RISK — Road Safety Initiative for Safer Karnataka — is a joint initiative by Consumer Affairs Department, Transport Ministry, Institute of Public Health and Ola. Road traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of unnatural deaths in Karnataka.
At the inauguration, Khader said, “Driving under the influence of alcohol has become a major issue and it is extremely critical that we channelise our efforts to bringing these instances down to zero. This will happen when there are alternatives available for them to avoid drunken driving.”
After completing its pilot in the city in the coming months, the initiative will be rolled out in various parts of Karnataka.
Raghuvesh Sarup, CMO, Ola, said, “Through this campaign, we are encouraging people to take safe rides back home after alcohol consumption and do their bit to make our roads and cities safer.”
Earlier in March, Uber came up with a similar arrangement with the Mumbai Traffic Police to reduce drink and drive cases in Mumbai and surrounding areas by installing breath analysers at bars and clubs in and around Mumbai to alert the customers about the level of alcohol in their blood.
