Rs 91.5 lakh cash seized from BJP Maharashtra Minister Subhash Deshmukh's vehicle
The minister said the cash was meant for payment to workers in a sugar factory affiliated to the group controlled by him.
The vigilance team seized Rs 91.5 lakh in cash from a vehicle belonging to BJP leader and Maharashtra cooperation minister Subhash Deshmukh in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra.
Reportedly, the team focused on preventing illegal practices during the civic body election, comprised of officials of the Maharashtra Police and Municipal Council, on the basis of suspicion checked the vehicle of Lok Mangal group.
Police have reportedly seized Rs 91.5 lakh in cash from a vehicle belonging to Solapur-based Lok Mangal group, which is controlled by BJP leader and Maharashtra cooperation minister Subhash Deshmukh. On the search of the vehicle, police seized 91.5 lakh cash in denomination of ₹ 1,000, which is now illegal tender.
The Times of India report quoted Osmanabad collector Prashant Narnaware confirming the incident. The incident had been registered in Omerga Police Station, who arrested the driver of the vehicle after he failed to produce any valid paper concerning the seized cash and also failed to reply to their questions satisfactorily, and also impounded the vehicle.
Reportedly, the Lok Mangal group staff said that the cash belonged to the Lok Mangal Bank. The minister said the cash was meant for payment to workers in a sugar factory affiliated to the group controlled by him.
Reports said that theseized cash has been deposited in the local treasury. ToI quoted Narnaware as saying: “We have sought clarification from the group. In addition, we have informed the income tax department and the local police. If the group justifies the cash, it will be returned. Else, legal action will be taken as per the provisions of law.”
Without losing out the chance to red-face BJP, opposition parties, including the NCP and the Congress, have demanded the immediate removal of the minister. Nawab Malik, NCP spokesperson in talk with The Financial Express alleged that maximum black money is stashed in the houses of BJP leaders. “Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis should sack Deshmukh immediately and the income tax department must search the official and residential premises of leading BJP politicians,” he said. Additonally, Congress echoed the NCP statement.
Reports have said that the Lok Mangal group has been under the scanner of SEBI for irregularities in mobilising funds for the group in past.
