Celebratory firing by a self-proclaimed godwoman and All India Hindu Mahasabha vice-president Sadhvi Deva Thakur and her six associates caused the death of the groom's maternal aunt and injured four people, including an 11-year-old-girl, in Karnal district of Haryana on Tuesday.
Sadhvi Deva Thakur was a guest at the the ring ceremony of Vikrant Singh of Sant Nagar in Karnal. Vikrant is believed to be a follower of Deva Thakur. Sadhvi and her associates opened fire to celebrate, the police say. A dozen men who had come with her also fired shots. While the groom’s aunt died in the hospital the condition of injured four people is said to be critical.
Sadhvi and her private guards allegedly aimed at dance floor where there was a crowd at the time. As the groom's aunt collapsed, the Sadhvi and her group ran away. Police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to murder and a case under Arms Act against Deva Thakur and her six associates, reported Times of India.
The district Superintendent of Police (SP) said that one of Sadhvi’s associates was carrying a .12 bore gun which developed some snag. While fixing the fault, the person had kept the fingers on the trigger and the gun went off as he closed the chamber. The SP informed that approximately 30 rounds were fired by Sadhvi and her men.
The kin of the victim has reportedly said that Sadhvi’s guards were firing at will and didn’t care who was in front of them.
It is said that Sadhvi who wears a saffron outfit and a turban complete with gold jewellery, is known to fancy firearms and has a flashy lifestyle. She likes to pose with guns and has strong views against a particular community.
Karnal is the assembly constituency of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar who heads the BJP government in the state.
