Sri lankan naval agencies detained four Indian fishermen
Sri Lankan naval agencies have detained four Indian fishermen and their fishing trawler. They have arrested from South West of Delft Island, while they have tried to poach in Sri Lankan waters.
The fishermen were hailing from Rameshwaram in Tamilnadu. The Srilankan coast guard was assisted by the Sri Lankan navy in arresting the fisherman.
The detained fishermen and their trawler have taken to Jaffna for further proceedings and they will be handed over to assistant director of fisheries.
This incident happened just one day before the scheduled bilateral talk between the representatives of India and Sri Lankan fishermen.
Around 13 fishermen representatives from Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and three to four fishermen representatives from Karaikal in the Union territory of Puducherry are expected to attend the meeting. The Sri Lankan side will be represented by an equal number of fishermen representatives from Jaffna, Mannar, Mullivaikal and Vanni.
While informal talks between the fishermen held in 2004 and 2010 as well as the talks held in Chennai in 2014 with the support of the Indian and Sri Lankan governments failed to solve the issues.
