Protests erupted in Kashmir again on Saturday after a 16-year-old boy succumbed to death to poisoning and torture by police. More than a dozen people were injured as security forces shot pellets and teargas shells towards a protesting crowd.
According to Indian Express, the family of the boy has alleged that the police tortured and force-fed poison to the Class X student. Police defended by saying the boy has already consumed poisonous substance on October 28.
They also stated that a probe was initiated into the matter
16-year-old Qaisar Hameed Sofi, a resident of Shalimar area of Srinagar had been missing since October 27. According to police, he was found in a drain the following day with a frothing mouth.
He was admitted to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Hospital. Eight days after,ie on Friday, he was declared dead.
During the burial on Saturday, mourners raised pro-Azadi slogans in Eidgah area.
Relatives of Qaisar told that he told his family members that the police made him feed poison in custody before his death. “He spoke last to his mother. He said, ‘mouji b hai mourhas (mother, I was murdered)’. He then slipped into a coma and was moved to the ICU, where he succumbed,” Mohammad Ayash, a cousin told Express.
“The funeral could have been completed peacefully, but forces fired teargas shells and pellets at several places. They are deliberately inciting violence.” Ayash blamed security forces.
Twelve people who got injured during crackdown were taken to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS).
The police defended the crackdown by clarifying that they fired pellets and teargas to disperse the crowd.
