The official said that leaves of the staff and their weekly offs have been canceled and the entire focus of their activity was on the ongoing revision of electoral rolls.
Even as political parties in UP are struggling to come to terms with the surprise decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw high-value notes, the Election Commission has indicated the poll schedule for UP Assembly polls could be issued any day after December 15.
‘’The EC has asked to us to be prepared for elections as the poll schedule for the state Assembly polls could be issued anytime after December 15,’’ said an officer at the Chief Electoral Office of UP. He added, “Very little time is left for the preparations for the next election in the largest state of the country.”
The official said that leaves of the staff and their weekly offs have been canceled and the entire focus of their activity was on the ongoing revision of electoral rolls. ”We are ready to publicize the final draft of electoral rolls on January 2, 2017 , and the polls would be held as per the final rolls.
However, the official did not reveal the EC plans on the number of phases for polling in UP. He indicated that this time the Commission can hold polling phases simultaneously in eastern and western parts of the state, to ease pressure on security forces arising due to the long journey.
The official said that the drive for the electoral roll revision is moving in a smooth manner and the aim of the EC will be achieved. The Election Commission is focusing on the maximum enrolment of the youth and the women.
Along with the elections in UP, four other states— Punjab, Goa, Manipur, and Uttarakhand, would also go to polls. The elections in these states are expected to be held between last week of January to the first week of March next year.
The EC is required to hold the first phase of elections within 45 days of the announcement of the poll schedule and the model code of conduct would come into force immediately.
