Malayalam film actor Jagannatha Varma passes away
He was a Kathakali artist and percussionist, and had acted in almost 190 movies
Noted Malayalam film actor and Kathakali artiste Jagannatha Varma, 77, passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday December 20. He was undergoing treatment for old-age ailments.
Varma started his career as a police officer with the Kerala Police Force and retired as a Superintendent of police.
Since the age of 14, he started learning Kathakali from teachers like Pallippuram Gopalan Nair Asan.
He had also learned percussion from Kalamandalam Raman Naboothiri after retiring from government service. His first Chenda (drum) performance (arangettam) was at the age of 74.
He was active in the Malayalam film industry for almost three decades with almost 190 movies in his credit.
Some of his well-acclaimed movies include Nakshathrangale Sakshi, Anthapuram, Sreekrishnaparanthu, New Delhi etc. He had also acted in a number of television serials in Malayalam.
