Advani has spoken, but is he heard by the BJP ?
BJP patriarch L K Advani has finally broken his silence over the parliament logjam . It has been while that the stalwart has spoken his mind on a tricky issue. Advani has expressed his anguish with the way Lok Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar are running the house.
The former deputy prime minister made these comments after the House was adjourned following a ruckus between the Treasury benches and the Opposition on demonetisation. “Neither you (Ananth Kumar) nor the speaker is able to run the house,” Advani said.
It is not wrong with what Advani has said but the question is whether L K Advani is heard by the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi? In the current scenario certainly not . Pushed to the sidelines in the Margdarshak Mandal along with other seniors like Murli Manohar Joshi and Yashwant Sinha. Advani is a pale shadow of his former self. Though during the various BJP parliamentary meets he is greeted by party leaders with lot of courtesy , but when it comes to suggestions he is given a cold reply.
It is a rather difficult times for the 89 year-old leader who made the party reach where it is today from a mere 2 seats in Lok Sabha in 1984. Most of his men have now switched sides to be with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. That leaders like Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj , Ananth Kumar, Uma Bharti , Venkaiah Naidu, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were all Advani’s men in his heydays is known to all . Whenever party spokespersons are quizzed query whether Advani has been sidelined they offer a diplomatic answers of that he continues to be an inspiration . But that is clearly not seen on the ground.
I happen recollect an apt adage of the current predicament of L K Advani. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had once remarked that BJP no longer needs the guidance of L K Advani these days. The Gandhi scion in a stinging comment said he has been replaced now by Gautam Adani. Rahul may not be taken seriously as politician but off- late there is substance and sense what he says. It is all together another matter or rather different debate as to why he is so reluctant to take over as Congress president given the ill – health of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Moreover, this is a suit boot ki sarkaar and corporate giants like Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani ( read his dedication of Jio and backing P M Narendra Modi on demonetisation) are calling the shots. And leaders like L K Advani can do nothing about it except watch helplessly and ponder as to what has happened to the very party he built.
