Reliance Jio impact: Airtel offers free voice calls across India

Bharti Airtel on Thursday announced free voice calls across India and additional 4G data under a new plan, in order to compete with Reliance Jio.

Airtel free voice calling packs come soon after Reliance Jio extended its Welcome Offer providing free voice calls, data, text messages and other services free by another 3 months, calling it the Jio Happy New Year Offer.

The new Rs. 345 pack by Airtel allows prepaid customers to make free voice calls, both local and STD, to any network in India. Along with this, buyers of the Rs. 345 Airtel prepaid pack will get 1GB of 4G data.

Under a separate recharge plan of Rs 145, users will be getting 300 MB of 4G data and unlimited calls within the Airtel network for 28 days. The pack will offer 50 MB data (in addition to free Airtel-to-Airtel calls across India) to customers with basic mobile phones, which are ideally suited for web surfing and accessing light social media applications.

Reliance Jio, which had launched its services in September with free services for all users till December 31, recently unveiled a three-month extension to its promotional offer – now ending in March.

Launch of service by Jio has led to a price war among the incumbent telecom operators. State-run BSNL has also earlier in the week offered attractive plans to remain competitive with the new entrant in the market and retain its market share. Vodafone has also announced ‘Double data’ for its prepaid users recently.

Aircel has also launched a new offer – FRC148 with a validity of 90 days. Customers will enjoy free Aircel to Aircel (Local and STD) calling and also get free Aircel to others (local and STD with a free usage of 15,000 seconds/month for three months) for 90 days with the First Recharge of Rs 149.
