Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday announced financial assistance for those seriously injured in the Kanpur train accident.

In second such incident near Kanpur in less than 2 months, 2 passengers were killed and 68 injured when 15 coaches of the Ajmer-Sealdah Express, train no 12987, derailed near Rura, around 50 kilometres from Kanpur.

The state goverment has announced Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured and Rs 25,000 to those who suffered minor wounds, PTI reported.


According to the reports, the train derailed when it was crossing a bridge over a dry canal in the area. The accident happened at 5:20 am, due to which 13 sleeper and 2 general coaches derailed.





Speaking to media agencies, Anil Saxena, ADG, PR Railway said, "No casualties have been reported so far. Ambulances are already on the spot and rescue work is in progress. A medical train from Kanpur has also arrived on the spot, and another from Tundla is on its way. All trains between Etawah and Kanpur are affected, and we are trying to divert them to an alternate route."



Speaking of the reason for the accident, Saxena told Times of India, "there was dense fog in the morning." He further informed that buses have also been plied to drop the stranded passengers from the spot to Kanpur railway station.



According to Times Now, the injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital. As per local sources, a few of the bogies of the train also fell into a canal, and travelers stuck in it will be rescued soon, the news channel said.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu said has announced an ex-gratia to the injured, on Twitter. He said, "I have directed CRB, all senior officials to personally ensure best possible help," he tweeted, adding that a thorough investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause.









The Indian railways have also announced that four trains — 12826/Jharkhand Sampark Kranti Express, 12382/Poorva Express, 12312/Kalka Mail, 12488/Seemanchal Express — have been diverted.

Railways has also diverted a few trains of the route. It has also announced special helpline numbers.
