American tourist alleges gang rape in Delhi 5-star hotel

A woman based in the United States has alleged gang-rape by a group of five men when she visited the city in March 2016 on a tourist visa and was staying at the five-star hotel near Connaught Place.

The Delhi police, as reported by Times of India, have said that they received a complaint from the woman through email. The woman said she would come to Delhi to record her statement once an FIR was registered.

The woman in her complaint has said that that had hired the tourist guide from an agency suggested by the hotel authorities. The tourist guide befriended her while showing her tourist spots in Delhi and adjoining states. The woman said on the night of the incident, he entered her room with four of his friends, also related to the travel agency, on the pretext of discussing their next day’s journey route plan.

They had drinks in the room together after which the tourist guide forced himself on her. The others also took turns to rape her before leaving the room.

Traumatised by the incident, the woman left India immediately and went back to the US. In her complaint, the woman said that she had not revealed the details of the incident to her family members and had gone into depression. She later approached a lawyer friend of hers, who suggested that she approach an NGO in India and take up the matter, reported Times of India.

The members of the NGO advised the woman to register a complaint through an email to the police commissioner. After the cops had received the email, the case was transferred to Connaught Place police station.

The police have now decided to file an FIR against the five men including the tourist guide. The police have also identified the tourist guide who was named as the prime accused in the complaint.
