Amma Unavagam at Thanjavur provides free food in memory of Jayalalithaa

As a tribute to J Jayalalithaa, Amma Unvagam (Mother’s Canteen) in Kumbakonam municipality of Thanjavur district offers free food for all today. Idli and pongal were served for breakfast in the morning. Curd rice will be available for free in the afternoon. “Amma provided food for Tamil people. No one should stay hungry on the day she left us. So we have decided to offer food for all for free,” said Amma Unavagam employees.

“Yesterday, since rumours about Amma’s death started to spread, shops and street vendors closed for the day resulting in an uncomfortable situation for the public. Though most of the people were in front of TV watching news updates, there were travellers and visitors who actually fell in trouble. This situation made us think about providing food for all. We prepared 1000 idlis, pongal for breakfast and curd rice for lunch. Poor people are approaching Amma Unavagam to satisfy hunger. We dedicate this offer in respect of our Amma,” said an Amma Unavagam worker.

Amma Unavagam was introduced by Jayalalithaa as a government scheme aimed at aiding economically disadvantaged sections of society.
