Rupee gains 7 paise to 68.15 against US dollar in early trade

At 9.50 am, the rupee was trading 6 paise up at 68.15, while Sensex was down 22.44 points, at 26,208. The Nifty50 index was trading 5.95 points, down at 8,080.

Rupee gains 7 paise to 68.15 against US dollar in early trade

Rupee gained 7 paise against US dollar in early trade on Monday amid increased selling of the US currency by exporters and banks.

At 9.50 am, the rupee was trading 6 paise up at 68.15, while Sensex was down 22.44 points, at 26,208. The Nifty50 index was trading 5.95 points, down at 8,080.

A higher opening in the market gave the development some momentum, but the euro sinking to a 20-month low against the American currency after Italy Prime Minister Matteo Renzi resigned following a heavy referendum defeat.


On Friday, the rupee had gained 14 paise to close at 68.20, the highest level in more than a week. During the last few weeks, rupee has weakened 3 percent and it was about to hit record lows. Rupee witnessed tension due to Narendra Modi's demonetisation drive which leads to market tension.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 42.63 points, or 0.16 percent, to 26,273.29 in early trade today.
