US President-elected Donald Trump has reportedly chosen Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as the new US ambassador to China.
"Governor Branstad's decades of experience in public service and long-time relationship with President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders make him the ideal choice to serve as America's Ambassador to China," stated Trump in a press statement.
Branstad has accepted the offer, revealed by Trump’s spokesperson Jason Miller. He is likely to accompany Trump’s in his "thank you" rallies in swing states on Thursday, added the spokesperson.

Branstad "has a tremendous understanding of China and the Chinese people, and is someone who very much impressed the President-elect, not just during their meetings on the campaign trail but also in their meetings after the election," further added Miller.

"It's very clear that Gov. Branstad is someone who will represent our country well on the world stage, and we couldn't be prouder of this selection," stated the spokesperson.

Welcoming the decision, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang described Branstad "is an old friend of the Chinese people, and we welcome his greater contribution to the development of China-US relations." Branstad’s expertise in public policy, trade, and agriculture have enabled him for being considered for the position, added sources close to Trump.

Branstad also enjoys a good rapport with Chinese premiere XI, since the duo’s first meeting in 1985. But, it is yet to be seen if they could break the ice in current diplomatic relations between US and China.

At present, the diplomatic relationship between both countries have worsened over issues like China's territorial claim over South China Sea, Paris Climate agreement and trade relations, among others.

However, the real challenge for the new envoy would be to restore US-China relations to their previous levels, say experts, given Trump's recent aggressive stance on China and US-China trade, say Chinese experts.
