A fire breakout in a fireworks factory warehouse in Trichy resulted in huge explosion around 7.00 am this morning. 16 people charred to death and 3 people are in hospital due to serious injuries. Around 20 workers were in the factory when the incident occurred.
The factory in Murugampatti spreads over 50 acres of land and it has 7 work units to produce different kinds of explosives. This morning, in a unit, 20 people were engaged in their regular works when the explosion happened. The factory has been manufacturing explosives for drilling and quarrying for the past 25 years. The sudden fire breakout and explosion created panic in the factory.
More than 50 firemen and 6 fire engines have fought to calm down the fire, but heavy rain delayed their work, said Palanisamy, district collector of Trichy. Minister Natarajan visited the spot and said that immediate action will be taken to close down the factory. Later police filed case against Kannan, owner of the factory.
Meanwhile, people residing in nearby villages are still afraid of another blast. They also say that chemicals and smoke would contaminate air in the villages.
