Google will be launching the Waymo under the aegis of Alphabet umbrella. Google said, Waymo is a dream machine for “a new way forward in mobility.”
“We’re now an independent company within the Alphabet umbrella,” Waymo CEO John Krafcik told media at Google headquarters in San Francisco.
Krafcik added Waymo team did test ride for the car in traffic in 2015 in Austin by a visually challenged Steve Mahan. But on Tuesday, he was in the car alone when Wymo navigated through public roads, added Google.
For Google’s self-driving car unit, it has appointmented former Hyundai North America executive Krafcik as the CEO. The Wymo project has achieved success in research and technology to make the project a success in the market, say experts.
“We’ve talked a lot about the two million miles we’ve driven on public roads,” Krafcik desribed about the success of the Waymo.
He told media that, “Now we’ve driven another million miles on public roads. We don’t talk as much about miles we put on in simulation. We’ve done over one billion miles in simuliation[…] And we have taken over 10,000 trips with Googlers and guests in places like Mountain View, Austin and Phoenix.”
Google X, and Waymo are two flagships that already achieved success in driving and testing. But, Waymo’s head Dmitri Dolgov observed that it has to go more like coming with better maps, bettering rides and navigation and also to withstand adverse weather like heavy rain and snow.
New business aims by Waymo:
“Self driving technology is awesome in areas like ridesharing, in transportation, trucking, logistics even personal use vehicles and licensing with automakers, public transport and solving the last mile” revealed Google officials in the press meet.
