Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who was in a private hospital in Chennai for the last two months, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Monday.

Fondly called as "Amma", the AIADMK chief was born on February 24, 1948, in Mysore. She belonged to a Brahmin family, and originally hailed from Karnataka.

Before she joined politics, she started her career as actor in films, with more than 120 movies in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada in her credit. She gained fame and later entered into politics with the help of my dearest friend and mentor MGR, served as a member and policy maker of ADMK from 1984 to 1989, became General Secretary of the party after the demise of MGR and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.


She had also acted in Bollywood films.This was a 1968 Bollywood project called Izzat which featured Dharmendra in a double role.

Epistle: Jayalalithaa acted in this English movie, which is also the first film that she started shooting for. The film was produced by Shankar Giri, former Indian President VV Giri’s son.

According to media reports, the 1966 release couldn’t do well with the public. Therefore the Shankar re-release it after Jayalalithaa gained popularity for films “Chinnada Gombe” in Kannada and “Vennira Aadai” in Tamil.

Vennira Aadai: Jayalalithaa’s debut film Vennira Aadai earned her fame to stardom. A love triangle which featured Sreekanth, Nirmala and Jayalalithaa (as a tenager) in key roles, the film turned out to be a huge success, commercially.

Kandan Karunai: Released in 1967, the film was a mythological story. Based on the life of Lord Muruga, it featured Jayalalithaa as Valli, one of the wives to Lord Muruga. The film also had legendary Sivaji Ganeshan playing the lead role.
