Justice J S Khehar as next CJI: SC dismisses plea challenging the appointment

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the plea by a lawyer's body asking not to make Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar as the next Chief Justice of India.

Apex Court's bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan and also comprising Justice L Nageshwar Rao, said while dismissing the plea that it was 'infructuous' after the notification was issued by President Pranab Mukherjee on 19 December.

The body - National Lawyers' Campaign for Judicial Transparency and Reforms - had moved SC seeking a stay on the appointment of next CJI, Justice J S Khehar.

The lawyer's association filed a civil writ petition in the apex court and has said that  Justice J Chelameshwar, who is senior to Justice Khehar, be appointed as the next CJI.

NCTJR's plea before the SC mentions their disagreement with Justice Khehar's appointment and suggests Justice Chelameshwar as an alternative.

They also argue that Justice Khehar is raucous even on the smallest of mistakes by lawyers and openly favours high-profile lawyers.
