Karun Nair scripted history by becoming the first-ever Malayali to hit a 300 in Test cricket. Nair’s powerful innings helped India reach highest ever score of 759 for 7 in Test cricket, overhauling the previous best of 726.

He became the first debutant to convert his maiden ton into a 300. Nair became the first Indian after Virender Sehwag to score a triple ton. He also became the third Indian to convert his century into a double ton. Karun achieved the 300 with a four as the jubilant crowd at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram stadium went upbeat over the achievement. India declared shortly thereafter.

Nair’s 300 came in the capital of Tamil Nadu, which is ruled by the AIADMK, founded by another Malayali, MG Ramachandran. Nair plays Ranji Trophy for Karnataka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the cricketer with a Twitter post.
