Kerala: Shifting of liquor outlets from state, national highways begins
The government has to shift 135 outlets from state and national highways by January end
The Kerala State Beverages Corporation Limited (Bevco) has started implementing the Supreme Court order of banning liquor shops within 500 metres of national and state highways across the country.
A beverages outlet situated at Koduvayur in Palakkad district on the NH was recently shifted 1 km away.
The government has to shift 135 outlets from state and national highways by January end.
The outlets have been ordered to shift their location upon the completion of getting another building to shift it.
The Beverages Corporation has 270 outlets while the Consumerfed has 39 liquor outlets.
The authorities told Mathrubhumi that a final decision to shift the 27 outlets belonging to Consumerfed on the national and state highways is yet to be decided.
Consumerfed is waiting to know the state decision on whether it would move an appeal against the SC order and then only will make its stand clear.
