Congress attacks Kiren Rijiju over Arunachal hydro project scam of more than Rs 450 crore, releases audio proof

The Congress on Tuesday charged Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju of alleged involvement in a corruption scandal of more than Rs 450 crore in connection with a 600-MW hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh and released the audio proof where Rijiju's cousin is offering to help a policeman as bribe in return for clearances.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala made the charge in a press conference. "Kiren Rijiju's role in this issue is under suspicion. So he should be sacked or asked to resign till a probe is complete," said Surjewala while releasing the audio proof.

The incident was first reported by Indian Express, where it names the minister, his cousin and several officials.

Chief Vigilance Officer Satish Verma from Eastern Electric Power Corporation has mentioned several people including Rjiju, in a report sent to CVC, Central Bureau of Investigation and the Ministry of Power in July 2015. The report talks about  Kameng Hydro Electric Project, considered as the state's biggest such undertakings.

CBI had sent teams for surprise visits after receiving the 129-page report but failed to file a case. Following his absence from duty, Verma was transferred to the Central Reserve Police Force in Tripura .

Verma alleged the contractor Patel Engineering Limited of trying to make money by submitting fake transportation bills and documents worth  “hundreds of crores of rupees”. Following the report's filing the reimbursement was stopped. The MoS reportedly wrote a letter to Ministry of Power demanding the release of the funds.

Goboi Rijiju, cousin of Minister is a sub-contractor in the project. He met Verma after the cop had sent his report. Verma recorded the meetings, in one of which he is heard offering “any help you need from Bhaiya [Kiren Rijiju].”

The project is related to the construction of two dams for the 600-MW Kameng Hydro Electric Project. They will be constructed over Bichom and Tenga rivers. The project started in 2005, is near completion.

Meanwhile, Rijiju denied the charges and called it a planted news.
