While the public battles long queues investing hours at a time to get Rs 2000, police has seized lakhs of new currency notes across three states.

The new currency notes were seized from Haryana, Gujarat and Maharashtra and several people were arrested in connection with the seizures. In Gujarat, Rs 76 lakh was seized, in Haryana Rs 10 lakh and in Maharashtra Rs 85 lakh.

Reportedly, Gujarat Police seized new 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 76 lakh in Surat on Friday. 4 people have been arrested in this matter. The police seized 3,800 notes of Rs 2,000 denomination. Surat income tax department officials will carry out a detailed probe in this case.


Reports have quoted police sources as saying, the cash was brought from Nasik and it was likely to be delivered to a person in Sachin district.

In Haryana, the crime branch on Thursday night seized new currency notes approximately worth Rs 10 lakh during a search operation near Gurugram. The police are investigating the matter.

In Maharashtra, the Mumbai crime branch detained two persons and seized new currency notes worth Rs 85 lakh from Dadar. The cash was seized by unit 5 of the crime branch from Babasaheb Ambedkar road on Friday afternoon, Mumbai Police spokesperson Ashok Dudhe told media. A probe is underway in this regard, the officer added.
