Pathankot attack: NIA files chargesheet against JeM chief Masood Azhar

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday filed a chargesheet against Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and others for masterminding the terror attack on the Pathankot Airbase in January.

The chargesheet also names Azhar’s brother Rauf Asghar, two handlers Kashif Jan and Shahid Latif, along with four dead attackers as the accused.

The accused have been charged for offences under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

NIA’s decision to file chargesheet is seen as an attempt to put Azhar and the terror outfit on the list of banned terror groups by the United Nations.

NIA had reached out to Pakistan to seek its assistance in the probe of Pathankot attack but has received no reply.
The NIA had technical and forensic evidence pointing to the involvement of Pakistan-based perpetrators in the deadly attack. The US also provided crucial evidence in the form of chats and email conversations of JeM members to the agency. But Pakistan has remained silent allowing an NIA team to visit. It hasn't given access to Azhar and other suspects either.

Azhar’s brother Rauf Asghar had released a video claiming responsibility for the terror attack on Pathankot airbase. In the video, he also spoke about the role played by his Masood Azhar in the attack.

Seven security personnel were killed in the Pathankot terror attack.
