Will Sasikala contest from RK Nagar, left vacant after Jayalalithaa’s demise?
It appears that arrangements are being made for Sasikalas elevation to the post of AIADMK general secretary, that the former Chief Minister held until her death
With the passing away of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa earlier this week, the RK Nagar constituency, from where she had won her membership to the Legislative Assembly, now lies vacant. News reports have emerged that Jayalalithaa’s companion VN Sasikala is planning to contest from RK Nagar soon.
A news channel had earlier reported an alleged midnight coup in Apollo hospital by Sasikala, where she reportedly coerced a sizable chunk of the party cadre to back her. Quick intervention by the BJP’s leadership is supposed to have prevented this and let the status quo continue while accommodating Sasikala in the AIADMK general secretary’s role.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and four of his Ministers — Forest Minister ‘Dindigul’ C. Sreenivasan, Public Works Minister ‘Edappadi’ K. Palaniswami, Electricity Minister P. Thangamani and Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani — were closeted with VN Sasikala at Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence for nearly two hours on Thursday, The Hindu reported.
“It thus appeared, three days after the passing of Jayalalithaa, that the ground was being prepared for Ms. Sasikala’s elevation to the post of party general secretary that the former Chief Minister held until her death,” the report stated.
Hence, a section of party loyalists are keen on fielding Sasikala in the RK Nagar constituency, as that would provide her political legitimacy.
As of now, she does not hold any senior post in the AIADMK, except being a member of its executive committee.
