2017 Punjab election: Navjot Singh Sidhu to formally join Congress today
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party in September last year, is set to formally join the Congress on Monday, reported New18.
His wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, an MLA from Amritsar East constituency, had already joined the Congress party in November.
Navjot Kaur Sidhu said: “Sidhu will contest election from Amritsar East… and Rahul Gandhi and Amarinder Singh will decide on his larger role in the party.”
Sidhu’s entry into Congress had been speculated for a long time. Earlier, he was in talks with the Aam Aadmi Party, which claimed it offered him the post of deputy CM if the party secures majority, but the negotiations did not yield any result and led to a split in Awaaz-e-Punjab, which Sidhu had formed with the Bains brothers.
“Rahulji was expected to return today. Both me and Navjot Singh will take up the roles decided by Rahulji and Captain Amarinder Singh,” said Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur.
“Navjot Singh Sidhu will contest from the constituency of his wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu,” former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress state unit chief Captain Amarinder Singh told reporters on Sunday.
“Sidhu will contest from Amritsar (East) seat as a Congress nominee,” added Singh.
Singh also said that, the final list of Congress candidates for the February 4 Assembly polls in Punjab will be out by January 9.
