A 54-year-old assistant sub inspector of police in Karnataka was arrested on Sunday for picking up a 30-year-old differently-abled woman near her home and raping her in a moving vehicle on Saturday night.

According to a report in Bangalore Mirror, though initial reports indicated that the woman was raped in a police patrol vehicle, Tumkur police claimed the crime was committed in a Bolero with private registration. But they confirmed that the official was in uniform when he committed the crime. Police also picked up another man named Eshwarappa, identified as the driver, and were probing the incident.

The rape survivor’s mother in her complaint alleged that her daughter often used to walk around outside their residence. The accused Umesh found her on the street shortly after 7:30 pm and initially asked her about her whereabouts. He then offered to drop her home, but after she entered the vehicle, he sexually abused her inside the moving vehicle.

As per the initial complaint, it was stated that the accused was in a police patrol jeep. Later, the accused policeman himself dropped the woman near her residence.
