The Second round of Chennai Open tennis tournament saw the biggest upset on Wednesday when top seed Marin Cilic was stunned 6-7 (5), 7-5, 5-7 by Jozef Kovalik.
World No.6 Cilic was the favourite of the tournament but he was not up to his levels against the 117-ranked Slovakian, giving away in 2 hours 49 minutes at the Stadium Court.
The 2014 US Open champion lost the first set in the tie-breaker against the qualifier. After giving away the first set, it was sure that Cilic had to battle a lot to come back. But he was expected to break Kovalik’s serve.
The Croatian came back by winning the second set, but his highly motivated rival withstood intense pressure he was subjected to. A confident Kovalik played the match neat and snatched the deciding set to claim a remarkable victory.
Also on Wednesday, Indian men's doubles team Rohan Bopanna and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan won their first round match, beating Brazil-Croatian pairing of Marcelo Demoliner and Nikola Mektic 6-4, 6-4.
But India’s doubles team N.Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan were beaten by Swedish duo of Johan Brunstrom and Andreas Siljestrom 6-2, 6-4.
