Compulsory Pongal holiday for Central govt staff in Tamil Nadu

The Central government has declared compulsory holiday for Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu for central government staff.

The Central government has declared compulsory holiday on the day of Pongal festival for the Central government staff in Tamil Nadu. The decision was taken following  a request  from AIADMK general secretary Sasikala Natarajan in this regard, said ANI.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make the harvest festival on the list of Compulsory Holidays. He said, according to Centre’s notification on holidays, Pongal has been listed as only optional holiday.

Urging the Centre to declare Pongal compulsory holiday in Tamil Nadu, Panneerselvam, added, “This apparent diminution in the importance accorded to Pongal for the past several years has created disquiet and an impression that an important people’s festival of Tamil Nadu has been ignored by the Central Government.”
