Devendra Fadnavis gives mayor’s bungalow for Bal Thackeray memorial at Rs 1 per year
The memorial project will be planned in such a way that heritage structure on the premises is unchanged. Details will be decided later, Sena MP Vinayak Raut said.
Devendra Fadnavis government has decided to give the Mayor’s bungalow at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai on a 30 years lease at a nominal rate of Re 1 per year for a memorial of the late Bal Thackeray, the Shiv Sena founder.
According to an ordinance issued by Urban Development Department on Tuesday to amend the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the commissioner was empowered, with the sanction of the corporation, to grant any immovable property belonging to the corporation for the purpose of Thackeray memorial.
Sena MP Vinayak Raut made the announcement of government decision at a party meeting today. He added that the Mayor’s bungalow and adjoining premises will be handed over to Balasaheb Thackeray Memorial Trust which is headed by Sena president Uddhav Thackeray.
“The memorial project will be planned in such a way that heritage structure on the premises is unchanged. Details will be decided later,” he said.
However, the opposition has opposed the decision, taken days before the code of conduct for the elections is expected to come into effect. "It's clear that the decision has been taken with an eye on the BMC polls," said Sachin Sawant, general secretary, Maharashtra Congress. "We are not against the memorial but why at the mayor's bungalow? Memories of the late Sena supremo are in Matoshree. Eyeing government land for the memorial is not a good idea," said Sawant.
