Maharaj allegedly claimed in a speech in Meerut, “This population rise in not because of Hindus. The population has risen because of those who support the concept of four wives and 40 children. It is not acceptable.” Sakshi Maharaj has asked all political parties to come together to make “population control” laws.
Maharaj’s statement has stirred a controversy as the comments have come under scanner in the wake of Supreme Court’s recent directive to political parties not to seek votes in the name of religion.
Reacting to Maharaj’s statement, Congress party said it was “offensive” and a clear violation of model code of conduct. “We will definitely move the election commission,” senior Congress leader KC Mittal told media.
