Over 20 schoolchildren feared dead after schoolbus, truck collide in UP

Over 20 schoolchildren were reportedly killed and more than 25 injured after a school bus collided with a truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district.

The bus was carrying around 60 students from JS Public School in Etah and the truck was speeding when the bus collided with it, reports said.

Reports also said the school was running despite the order from district administration to cancel classes for the day in view of the cold weather.

“The school was open against the order of district admin to close schools due to cold. More than two dozen children have died,” UP DGP Javeed Ahmad was quoted in media reports as saying.

“Priority is to rescue trapped children. Rescue operation is underway. Strict action will be taken against the school,” he added.

The driver of the school bus also died on the spot, while the truck driver has been admitted in the hospital after suffering severe injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow at the loss of lives and sent his condolences to the family of the bereaved.

Expressing anguish at the death of the children, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has directed all district officials to go to the spot to ensure that the best possible medical care is given to the injured children, NDTV reported.

More details are awaited.
