Over 10 soldiers have been reportedly died and several others missing in Jammu and Kashmir as two avalanches hit Gurez Sector of Kashmir, army officials said.

“The avalanches had hit an Army camp and an Army patrol in two separate locations between January 25 and 26 in Gurez,” an Udhampur-based Army spokesman was quoted by The Hindu as saying.
“The Army is working in extreme bad weather and heavy snowfall. The rescue operations were on immediately after the avalanches were reported,” he added.
Meanwhile, NDTV reported the four avalanches on a single day have claimed the lives of 15 persons , including 11 soldiers and four civilians. The report said three of the avalanches took place in the high altitude area of Gurez, and one in Sonmarg.
A warning of avalanche has been issued by the authorities on Tuesday following a fresh snowfall and it advised people to stay away from the mountains and foothills.
In Jammu and Kashmir, places including Kupwara, Bandipora, Anantnag, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Budgam, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Doda and Kishtwar districts are particularly prone to avalanches.
Expressing sadness at the death of soldiers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has directed the authorities for speedy search and rescue operations.
