Kerala: BJP hartal in Kannur after party worker hacked to death

A BJP worker died after he was attacked by a gang of unidentified men on Wednesday night at his house in Kannur, Kerala. Blaming the ruling CPM for the attack, the district unit of the BJP has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal on Thursday.

Even though Santosh (52) was taken to hospital by police and neighbours, he had succumbed to injuries by then, The Indian Express said. Santosh, a booth worker of the BJP, is survived by his mother, wife and two children.

He was alone in his home when the attack took place.

The school arts festival, currently being held in Kannur, has been kept untouched by the hartal. Still, protesters were reportedly seen blocking vehicles.

The BJP has also demanded an explanation from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, whose constituency of Dharmadam, is close to the site of the attack. Santosh was a BJP candidate in the last panchayat elections in Dharmadom.

At least six murders of party workers were reported in Kannur last year with casualties on both the CPM and the RSS sides.
