Kerala: Engg student commits suicide after teacher allegedly catches him cheating

Jishnu Pranoy (18), a first year engineering student of Nehru Group of Institutions, Pampadi, Thrissur in Kerala, recently committed suicide as he was allegedly caught copying during exams.

As per students of Nehru College, a teacher named Praveen was in charge of exam hall and he had alleged Jishnu of copying exams and insulted him in front of others.

Praveen also said that he could be debarred from attending exams. He did it without any proof of Jishnu copying exams, say students.

It was expected from the management to take reprisal on students who talk against them. It is doubted that the same has happened in the case of Jishnu too. He was very upset after coming out from the office of the principal. The management had already started taking measures to debar him.

The same evening on Friday, Jishnu went to his hostel room and closed the door. Later, when his friends were unable to find him, they broke the door and found Jishnu in a critical stage.

Jishnu had hanged himself on a hook in the bathroom. Though he was alive when taken down, the students were unable to take him to hospital as teacher Praveen denied help. Later, they took him to hospital with the help of another student and it was too late.

It is a known fact that students in such colleges are generally tortured in the name of attendance and internal marks.

Students also alleged that there is a torture room in the college to handle students physically. The management is also said to be having goonda connections to threaten students who oppose. These facts make students to keep silent on any injustice happens to them.

To add to it, wounds were found on the face and legs of Jishnu, which is suspected to be of the result of torture in the college.

Students and activists have gathered at Nehru College to protest against the injustice meted out on Jishnu.
