Madras HC turns down Bharat Ratna for Jayalalithaa plea

The Madras High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation seeking direction to Centre to announce Bharat Ratna for the late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa.

Last month, the Tamil Nadu cabinet, at its first meeting after her demise, had passed a resolution to recommend Jayalalithaa for Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour of the country.

The cabinet had also decided to propose to the Centre to install her life-size bronze statue in Parliament complex and raise a memorial building for the leader at the MGR Memorial site, where she was laid to rest.

The Cabinet also resolved to rename the memorial as Dr Puratchi Thalaivar MGR and Puratchi Thalaivi Amma Selvi J Jayalalithaa Memorial.

The Cabinet had proposed to unveil a portrait of the leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
