Manchester United lose 2-1 to Hull City, still reaches League Cup final with first leg victory

Manchester United survived a threat from Hull City to reach the League Cup final after Oumar Niasse's late goal gave the latter a hard fought victory in Thursday's semifinal second leg.

United, with its advantage of 2-0 from the first leg went into an ice-cold  KCOM Stadium where the lead was halved by Tom Huddlestone's 35th-minute penalty and then restored by Paul Pogba's second-half goal.

Niasse's late finish gave a tense end for Jose Mourinho's men, but the Red Devil s managed to complete 3-2 aggregate win that let through to final where they will meet Southampton at Wembley on February 26.

United is in final after their victory over Aston Villa in 2010, and Southampton is considered as the tournament's favourites with their win over Liverpool.

A toughened Hull under new coach Marco Silva could console themselves for their victory over Manchester since a 2-0 success at the old Boothferry Park in November 1974. The club also displayed their support for Ryan Mason, who is recovering in hospital after fracturing his skull at Chelsea on Sunday, wearing T-shirts bearing his name and a minute's applause.

A trifling crowd reflected both the significant dominance United had over Hull with the first leg victory and the ongoing commotion against Hull's owner Assem Allam. Silva made seven changes in his starting lineup, which did little to encourage the Tigers to turn the tie around.

Bu from the starting whistle, it was Hull who displayed spirited football, and United looked a bunch of strangers, with centre-backs Phil Jones and Chris Smalling suspiciously unconvincing. Hull tested United goalkeeper David de Gea several times including the miraculous save of Sam Clucas freekick.
