Stand on Masood Azhar is Professional and objective: China
"The purpose of China to put forward technical hold on that issue is to create enough time for the committee and relevant parties to consult with each other on the relevant issue," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.
Defending its stand to protect Pakistan-based JeM leader Masood Azhar, China on Thursday said that the decision was "professional and objective".
It is to be noted that India has moved United Nations to declare Masood Azhar a "global terrorist" but China is the only country in United Nations Security Council blocking India's move. It has been putting a technical hold to stop discussions at the United Nations Security Council on the role played by the terror leader on the ground that it needs more time to discuss the issue.
"We have taken a responsible and constructive part in a relevant discussion in a professional and objective way," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in response to charges from New Delhi that China was adopting double standards when it came to fighting terrorism. "The purpose of China to put forward technical hold on that issue is to create enough time for the committee and relevant parties to consult with each other on the relevant issue," he said.
On Wednesday, Minister of state for external affairs MJ Akbar said that China adopts a double standard by stopping discussion on the role of a terrorist leader while proclaiming its seriousness to fight terrorism. "We really do expect China to hear the voice of the world, not just the voice of India on terrorism," he said at a press conference.
China has blocked discussions on the issue on two occasions, first for six months followed by a second one for a period of three months ending December 31 — after which India has to file a fresh application to get the Pakistan-based Azhar listed as a terrorist by the UN.
Geng said, "relevant attitude and action of China comply with the resolution of the UNSC and rules of procedure of the committee."
